Taking steps to challenge homophobia

STALYBRIDGE and Hyde MP James Purnell has backed an event designed to stamp out homophobia across the region.

The Walk Against Homophobia, on June 13, was a 5km sponsored walk organised by the Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF), in Manchester.

The event was designed to send out a clear message about the unacceptability of homophobia, as well as raising money for LGF services for lesbian, gay and bisexual people across the north west.

It’s the second time the LGF have organised the walk, which they hope will be an annual event. And among those taking part in the walk was LGF patron Antony Cotton.

He was joined at the start of the event by James Purnell and Manchester Central MP Tony Lloyd.

And before the start of the walk, Mr Purnell outlined steps taken by the Labour government, including the introduction of civil partnerships, adoption rights and equalities legislation.

Following the Walk Against Homophobia, LGF chief executive Paul Martin said: "The walk was a very visible reminder of the homophobia that still exists in our society.

"It was great to see so many people come together on the walk to challenge homophobia and raise money not only for the LGF’s services for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, but for the LGBT charity of their choice."
